About the Ocean Breeze WaveRunners:
The Ocean Breeze WaveRunners Youth Track & Field/Cross Country Club was established in 2015 to provide the children of Staten Island with a competitive, athletic team to challenge them physically and mentally to create responsible young adults and future leaders in our community. Over the past ten years, the team has worked hard to become one of the most successful and respected youth clubs in the United States, winning countless regional and national championships. Athletes have become elite high school athletes, earned college scholarships, and have future aspirations of representing Team USA.
- Parents or guardians must carefully read the information below before registering for the program
- Your registration is not accepted until there is proof of USATF membership with approved age verification
- All returning athletes must have an active membership to rejoin the team
- Your child must have a doctor's note to start practice.
Responsibility of Parents prior to starting practice:
- Parents must go to USATF.org and sign up your child(ren) for a USATF Youth Membership. During the registration process the following two items must be completed:
- Please ensure you add the Ocean Breeze WaveRunners as your affiliation (club code 06-1282)
- Please have a copy of your Child's birth certificate or passport available in a digital format, you will need to upload it into the membership database for date of birth verification. (Athletes can not be entered into any meets until this is completed)
- Membership is $35 per year and expires on December 31st of each year. Athletes that remain with the WaveRunners for the indoor and outdoor season will need to renew their membership in December for 2027.
- Upon arrival to your child's first day of practice. Parents will receive a packet including the following: Code of Conduct form, and NYC Parks and Recreation membership form, a Dismissal form, and photo release form. This must be filled out and returned the same day you receive it.
- A check for $40 made payable to the Ocean Breeze Park Alliance for competition uniform.
- Doctors note clearing child to participate in sports
Athletes will not be eligible to practice until all the above items are complete.
Responsibility of Athletes/Parents throughout the season:
The WaveRunners program is a competitive program and we expect athletes and parents to be dedicated to the program. We are a team and each athlete plays a part in our success.
In addition to the items will be required as part of the team:
- Practice will start on March 30th. Practice is held on Monday, Tuesdays & Thursdays from 4PM - 6 PM at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex
- Coach to parent communication is done via the WaveRunners Weekly Update page. All information regarding competitions, practices and all general team updates can be found here.
- All athletes must participate in a minimum of two practices a week and parents are responsible for transportation to and from practice sites. Most practices will be held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
- Must attend all team competitions (known as meets) Please see the section below titled: Competitions
- During Championship season, the WaveRunners who qualify will travel outside of the NYC area to compete. Parents must pay for overnight accommodations (athletes may room together)
- All airlines travel to National Championship meets.
- Warm-up track suit ( the cost is $93.00 per set – more information will be available once the season begins)
- All athletes must participate in two service or volunteer projects per year, as part of our Growing Champions program.
- Families must participate in all team fundraising activities.
- Athletes should attend practices and events with the following items:
- Running shoes: We recommended all athletes to purchase a pair of Nike Pegasus running sneakers for practice or similar model. No crocs, open toe, hard sole, or basketball/soccer shoes are permitted.
- Appropriate clothing: short sleeve shirts and shorts in warm weather and long sleeve shirts and running appropriate pants for colder weather
- Water bottle with name on it
- Small drawstring bag that is used for track purposes only
As part of the team, athletes will receive the following from the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex:
- Entries paid for all competitions (approximately a $12-45 value per meet) Transportation to all local competitions, if needed.
- Professional level coaching with world class venues to train and compete in.
- Assistance with high school and college recruitment and selection.
- A Ocean Breeze WaveRunners t-shirt
- All athletes will be recognized at our Annual Breezy Awards Banquet, held each fall.
- Free Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex membership and early access to register for other events.
Important information to know before signing up your child to be part of the team:
- Athletes must participate in practice two days a week and attend the competition on the weekends. Practices will be held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. Athletes who do not participate in practice or come to meets will be removed from the team roster.
- All athletes must attend at least six practice sessions prior to their first competition.
- Athletes running for the Ocean Breeze WaveRunners are not permitted to race outside of the club's competition schedule without prior approval from the coaching staff. This policy will be enforced for the safety and health of all athletes
- Athletes and parents will be asked to sign a standard of conduct and behavior guidelines prior to each season. Any athletes or parents found to violate these guidelines will be asked to leave the team.
- All athletes and parents are asked to be respectful to one another. Bullying, name-calling, or any other conduct unbecoming to Ocean Breeze will not be tolerated at any level.
Training Groups:
The coaching staff will designate training groups based on age and ability level. Our coaches can make necessary adjustments based on the athlete's performance and ability at any time.
Competitions (known as meets):
- The WaveRunners program is a competitive travel program, and athletes MUST travel to all competitions they are eligible to compete in.
- The Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex will pay all entry fees for all meets, and athletes are expected to attend all meets.
- Athletes will run in their respective age groups for all competitions. Age groups are based on year of birth and not age on date of competition.
- All athletes must have a minimum of 6 practices to participate in a meet (exceptions may be made for returning athletes)
- We understand life and unforeseeable events do arise, and, in those cases, we expect that parents communicate with the WaveRunners coaches prior to the entry deadlines before the entry fee is due. To contact the coaches, email OBWaveRunners@parks.nyc.gov

**Athletes must be turning 7 in 2026 to be eligible for the team**
*Under USATF Rule 300.1 (c), "Athletes must be at least seven (7) years of age on December 31 of the current year to compete at the Youth Athletics or Junior Olympic National Championships." ** Athletes born in 2007 who are still 18 through the final day of the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships are eligible to compete in the 17-18 divisions through that meet. This extended eligibility does not apply to cross-country events.
