Meet the January 2026 Member of the Month: Evelyn Brobbey

Born in Brooklyn to a family originally from Ghana, West Africa, she grew up in Brooklyn and later moved to Staten Island at 13 years old. This hard-working mom comes from a close-knit family that values health, community, and hard work. She pursued her education in the healthcare field and currently works in a profession focused on helping others improve their well-being.

She was referred to our complex by member Leena after their previous gym closed down, and they continue to keep each other motivated. She joined Ocean Breeze seeking a supportive, motivating environment where she could focus on both physical and mental wellness. The welcoming atmosphere and variety of classes made it the perfect fit.

For her New Year's resolution, she is focusing on spiritual growth and improving her health through better nutrition and regular exercise. She also has a milestone 50th birthday coming up next month in February. Her favorite place to work out is the Workout Cage (upstairs) because the energy is always high, the lighting sets a great mood, and the instructors know how to push you while keeping things fun.

A typical workout includes a mix of light cardio for warm-up, strength training to build muscle and endurance, and a cool-down with stretching or mobility exercises. She likes to keep her workouts balanced and intentional.

She is inspired by people who stay consistent—those who show up even on the hard days and push through challenges with a positive attitude. Melissa, one of her instructors, has been amazing and instrumental in her weight loss. "I can hear her screaming, 'You can do hard things,' all day, and it motivates me to push myself even more!"

She enjoys staying active, exploring new wellness routines, reading, spending time with family, and discovering new restaurants in her community.

Her fondest memory at Ocean Breeze was completing her first group class and feeling the incredible support from both the instructor and fellow members. It reminded her why she joined—to be part of a positive, motivating community. Her current goals are to build strength, improve endurance, and stay consistent with her weekly workouts. Most importantly, she wants to maintain a routine that supports both her physical health and overall weight loss. Fitness has always complemented her career, giving her the energy and balance she needs.
