Prior to joining NYC Parks, Stephen attended East New Transit Tech High School in Brooklyn, New York where he excelled in track and field and won two national titles at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships as a part of the 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams as a junior. He continued to climb the ranks and as senior he went on to capture the New York City Indoor Championship in the 55m hurdles.
Outdoor season was no different as he continued to become one of the best in the state finishing in first at the New York City Outdoor Championships in the 400m hurdles and the 110m hurdles. He went on to win the New York State Championship in the 400m hurdles and placed seventh at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in the 400m hurdles. Stephen received the PSAL Heisman Award for track and field accomplishments. After high school, he went on to compete for Kent State University from 2010-12.
Upon graduation Stephen worked with the City Park Foundation summer youth program as a track & field coach for multiple summers. In 2013, Stephen started working with NYC Parks at the Alley Pond Adventure Course as an Adventure Course Facilitator. Stephen was able to further his career and his love for track and field by joining the team here at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
McLean started at Ocean Breeze when the complex opened its doors in 2015, serving as a recreation specialist and head coach of our youth track & field team, the Ocean Breeze WaveRunners. In November of 2019, McLean was named the Track & Field Coordinator here at Ocean Breeze.Â
During his tenure as head coach, McLean has coached 15 All-Americans and guided the team to the 2022 USATF National Youth Team Championship. In September of 2022, the team was honored at City Hall by Mayor Eric Adams for their accomplishments & received a proclamation that September 1, 2022 was the first-ever "Ocean Breeze WaveRunners Day."
Mclean has developed strategic partnerships with local schools, clubs, regional, national and collegiate track & field programs. He assists with the scheduling and coordination of over 85 track & field meets as well as overseeing our weekly practice sessions, community running and track & field programs, camps, & clinics here at Ocean Breeze.
Stephen is happy to give back to the sport that helped mold him into the person he is today.
Stephen received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Sports Administration at Kent State University in 2012.
